# How to Find Work in Construction

Are you looking for a fast-paced career that fits your skills and interests? Do you want to develop in-demand skills for roles with high earning potential? If so, the [construction industry](https://www.staffccs.com/2018/06/04/how-to-get-your-foot-in-the-door-in-the-construction-industry/) may be a good fit for you.

The construction industry can be easy to enter. As you develop your knowledge and skill set, you can advance within the field. The increasing demand for construction workers provides ongoing opportunities for professional success.

## **Follow these guidelines to begin working in construction.    **

### **Complete Your Education**

A high school diploma or GED typically is required to work in construction. Taking classes in math, physics, welding, shop, or a specific trade can be beneficial.

### **Consider Trade School**

Finishing vocational coursework in a specialized trade gives you a competitive advantage over other construction candidates. Completing this type of schooling provides the knowledge and experience needed for success in a role.

You may be able to complete a trade program online or at a community college in 1-2 years. You also might be able to enroll in trade school classes during high school. The trade school degree you earn could help you become a plumber, electrician, sheet metal worker, carpenter, architect, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technician.

### **Consider an Apprenticeship**

An apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training. You get paid to develop your construction skills and experience.

An apprenticeship typically lasts for 4 years. Then, you can move to full-time employment in your field.

### **Earn Certification**

Many trades require certification for job candidates. Examples include working with electricity, hazardous materials, or rigging and scaffolding.

Becoming certified shows you have specialized skills. This demonstrates your commitment to professional development.

Certification sets you apart from other construction job candidates. It also qualifies you for more advanced positions.

### **Create Your Resume**

Highlight in your resume your knowledge, skills, and experience. Include any apprenticeships or certifications you completed.

Emphasize your strengths, accomplishments, and quantifiable results that are relevant to the construction position. Examples include stamina, communication, teamwork, organization, problem-solving, and willingness to learn.

Use relevant keywords and key phrases throughout your resume. These words and phrases show you fit the qualifications required for the role you want.

### **Apply for Jobs**

Visit job boards to find construction roles you are qualified for. Focus on the keywords you included in your resume.

Include in your job search a staffing agency that specializes in the construction industry. The agency can place you in a position that fits your education, skills, experience, and goals.
