This is especially popular in the northeastern United States. The U.S. Department of Energy’s [2021 Offshore Wind Market Report](https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2021-08/Offshore%20Wind%20Market%20Report%202021%20Edition_Final.pdf) shows that American offshore wind power generation grew by 24% in 2020. This increase is expected to continue. As a result, significant opportunities are opening up for job seekers with the right skills and experience. [The Global Wind Energy Council](https://gwec.net/wind-can-power-3-3-million-new-jobs-worldwide-over-next-five-years/) anticipates 3.3 million new wind power jobs with competitive pay to be created by 2026.   ## **Focus on the following areas to land an offshore wind job.** --- ### **Get the Facts About the Industry** The relative newness of the offshore wind industry means many myths and misconceptions exist. One misconception is that the offshore wind industry is difficult to enter. In reality, many job seekers transitioned from other careers by gaining additional safety or technical training. Construction workers may qualify for offshore wind jobs as crane operators, electricians, line workers, or welders. Multiple opportunities for skilled workers are available now. ### **Know the Job Qualifications** Some sectors of the offshore wind workforce require expertise in science, manufacturing, engineering, construction, business, and/or economics. There also is training for relevant skills, such as mastering the wind turbine’s electrical components and ensuring the structures’ resiliency. Post-secondary education typically is not required for offshore wind jobs in construction or manufacturing. However, there are apprenticeships and vocational paths you may decide to pursue. ### **Understand the Industry Challenges** Because the offshore wind industry is emerging, job seekers may hesitate to take on apprenticeships in this newer field.
